Cody Toppert is an Ivy League educated, former professional basketball player who served as the Director of Player Development / Assistant Coach for the Phoenix Suns. Cody has unique ability to enhance, teach, refine and impact the mindset and abilities of some of the top players in the world.

Served as the Director of Player Development for the Phoenix Suns. Created and managed the development plans for Phoenix Suns players. Served as Devin Booker, Mikal Bridges and Tyler Johnson’s individual coach. In addition, Cody completed 8 team scouts, and 27 personnel scouts on the season, leading team film sessions prior to each scout and sitting front bench for 8 games. Cody created the Suns Player Development App tracking workouts, types and points of empha- sis throughout the season. Cody also served as staff liaison to the analytics department, assisting with the creation and implementation of the Suns pre and post game analytics packets under Head Coach Igor Kokoskov.
Cody’s time with the Suns saw DEVIN BOOKER average a career-high 26.6 points (7th in NBA) and a career-high 6.8assists (14th in NBA), as one of four players to average at least 25 points and 6 assists this season along with James Harden, LeBron James, and Damian Lillard. Devin also posted a career-high 58.4% TS%, increased his FT Rate to36.2%, decreased his Midrange Rate by 6%, improved his Rim finishing by 4% and produced 43.9 points per game(scored or assisted, 97th percentile).
The season also saw MIKAL BRIDGES have a Steal-to-Turnover Ratio of 1.84, ranking 2nd in the NBA this season and2nd in NBA history by any rookie behind only Kawhi Leonard. With 105 three-pointers and 129 steals, Mikal was also the first rookie in Suns history and 11th in NBA history to have 100+ three- pointers and 100+ steals. Bridges joined Donovan Mitchell as the only rookies to do so this decade.
T.J. WARREN ranked 7th in the NBA, shooting 42.8% from the three-point line compared to his previous career mark of 28.3%. Warren made 77 three-pointers this season while entering the year having made just 79 three-pointers over his first 4 seasons.
JOSH JACKSON saw a major increase in his three-point shooting, moving from 26.3% to 34.4% this season, including40% after the All-Star break while upping his attempts. Josh was also able increase his FT% and assists.
Of the Suns’ points this season, 60.2 percent were scored by players age 22 or younger, which is the 5th-highest of any team in NBA history. Additionally, the Suns became the only team this decade to have five rookies post at least one game of 19 points or more.
PHOENIX SUNS / NORTHERN ARIZONA SUNS Head Coach; Arizona 2017-18
Served as the Head Coach for the Northern Arizona Suns. The 2017-18 team finished with an NBA G-League league best 5 NBA Call-Ups to go along with a franchise record 23 wins. The Suns rolled out one of the league’s most dominant offenses ranking 3rd in Offensive Efficiency (1.12), 2nd in Points Per Game (119.3) and 2nd in Good Play % (74.8) a mark that would rank 1st in NBA History. Additionally the 14.9 made three-pointers per game not only lead the league but wouldrank 2nd in NBA History just behind the 2017-18 Houston Rockets. Overall, the Suns were top 5 in the G-League in 11 offensive categories, and the team had historically good shot selection with elite offensive efficiency as 87% of scoring possessions came at the free-throw line, at the rim or from behind the three-point line.
Cody’s squad saw a league leading 5 players called up to the NBA.
On April 10th, 2018 players who appeared in at least 20 NAZ Suns games combined to score 70 points as the Phoenix Suns defeated the Dallas Mavericks, an All-Time Record for points scored by G-League players in an NBA game.
HOUSTON ROCKETS/RGV VIPERS, Assistant Coach; Texas 2015-17
Served as the offensive coordinator for the 2016-17 Western Conference Champion Vipers. In 2016-17 the Vipers had the#1 Offensive Rating (116.6) in the D-League or the NBA (Golden State 113.2) while leading the league in EFG% and TS%. The 2015-16 squad finished with the leagues’ top ranked offense, advancing to the Western Conference Semi-Finals. The Vipers won 67 games in Cody’s two years, rolling out the league’s most dominant offense.
Cody worked closely with Eric Gordon during the offseason of 2017. Additionally, Cody was asked to spend significant time in Houston leading up to and during NBA training camp working closely with Chris Paul, James Harden, and Clint Capela among others.
Cody assisted the Rockets Front office with various scouting projects pertaining to the evaluation of teams and players heading into the offseason and free agency.
NBA SUMMER LEAGUE
Cody assisted the Rockets staff during the 2016 and 2017 NBA Las Vegas Summer League, working with the young players during practice sessions, handling personnel scouting and assisting with in game coaching and strategy as well as offseason workouts with veteran players.

Cody has extensive experience using Second Spectrum, SportsTec (Sports Code), Krossover and Synergy video editing software to produce highlights, scouting edits and game clips. Cody is also exceptional with Fast Draw playbook software. His other computer experience includes maintaining his own website and working with most standard applications including Excel, Powerpoint and others. In addition to Cody has created a Player Development tracking app and has extensive experience using analytics to formulate game strategy, analyze current strategy and assist in player development.
Cody played collegially at Cornell University where he finished 8th overall in Cornell history with 1,232 points, as well as 1st (5th in Ivy League History) in career 3 point fields goals made, 11th at Cornell in career steals, 34th in career rebounds and 26th in career assists. Following his college career Cody played 7 seasons professionally including seasons in the NBA D- League as well as Italy, Spain, and Germany.
